CC Netherlands introduces the Bernstein SCR-P Safety Controller with DCD diagnostics

The SCR P-Series Bernstein Safety Controller is a programmable safety relay particularly suitable for larger machines with multiple safety components or SRF safety sensors. This programmable safety controller allows you to pull in multiple signals from the safety sensors or components. Those signals can be quickly configured and programmed via drag and drop with the Bernstein SCR-P software. All information and diagnostic data from Daisy Chain Diagnostics (DCD) are available wherever and however you need them. In short, a smart solution with comprehensive diagnostic data for your safety application.

Below you can read why the Safety Controller is unique within Bernstein's Safety System, what its main benefits are and the importance of DCD diagnosis for your machines.

Flexibility in the safety circuit

With a standard safety relay, for example, the entire machine is shut down when an emergency stop is pressed. What makes the Safety Controller unique are the different zones that you can switch off separately from each other. This creates flexibility when setting up the safety circuit and shutting down the machine. In addition, the simple way of configuration and programming via drag & drop and the possibility of communication with another PLC system creates a unique product in our range of safety relays. The SCR-P safety controller has as standard the communication capability for SIEMENS Profinet, Ethernet/IP and Modbus.

What are the biggest advantages?

The Bernstein SCR-P Safety Controller is the newest addition to Bernstein's Smart Safety System and a smart alternative to standard SCR safety relays. Read all about the benefits of this controller below.

Two-wire system

The Safety Controller operates on a two-wire system. In this, there are two wires that pass a cable along the components of the shutdown and at the same time pass a piece of diagnostics over that same data cable. In that diagnostic, you can see if, for example, a door has opened or a hectometer is misaligned. This two-wire system runs over the existing OSSD signals of the safety circuit.

Simple wiring

Normally, all switches are wired individually to a control cabinet. With the Safety Controller, all cables can be looped through and you have a huge cabling advantage. Because little cabling is required, cost and assembly time are reduced. In addition, more cables are more error-prone, so that risk is also reduced. Looping the OSSD safety signals is nothing new in itself, but what is unique about this system is that all status messages also run over the same wires. So it is easy to see which safety switch is interrupted from the sensors connected in series.

Flexibility in machine expansion

When something is added to a machine, the safety chain needs to be extended with additional safety sensors. With the Safety Controller, there is no need to purchase a new safety relay for this purpose. You only need to configure this extension in the software, without having to make any adjustments in the control cabinet.

The importance of a DCD diagnosis for your machines

In addition to the above benefits, the safety chain also provides the ability to read states of the individual SRF sensors. The sensor farthest away from the control system (up to 100 meters away) generates and modulates a data packet containing its status information on the safety signals. The sensor after that reads in the data packet, supplements it with its own status information and passes the packet to the next sensor. At the control end of the safety chain is an additional diagnostic module that separates the diagnostic information from the safety signal and prepares it for communication to, for example, a higher-level system, such as a PLC system. The fact that the cause of a machine shutdown does not have to be searched for, but is immediately visible, among other things, reduces the downtime of a machine.

Fixed connection to PLC system

The Safety Controller has an established link to PLC systems via Profinet, Ethernet/IP or Modbus. There are 4 steps to complete PLC interfacing.

  • Ensure safe configuration.
  • Perform automatic interface configuration.
  • Integrate the SCR-P Safety Controller into the hardware configuration of the PLC using the instruction manual.
  • All information and diagnostic data are now available in the PLC system.
